DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN: Michiganders Hit with Another Utility Rate Hike Request as Trump’s War on Cheaper, Cleaner Energy Rages On

Lansing, MI – As Trump’s Iran War drags on, driving up the cost of everything, DTE is requesting yet another electricity rate hike for Michigan consumers. This comes on the heels of DTE just being granted their last request in February, their CEOs getting huge paychecks, and all while they paid zero in federal taxes for 2025.

Representatives John James (MI-10), Tom Barrett (MI-07), and Bill Huizenga (MI-04) voted to cut our energy supply even more by gutting clean energy projects across Michigan as demand soars. These attacks on clean energy led to 16 clean energy projects in Michigan being canceled, delayed, or losing federal funding, resulting in 6,092 lost jobs and $385 million in lost investment.

Since 2025, at least five utilities have enacted or proposed rate hikes in Michigan, totaling more than $4.6 billion, affecting over 4.3 million electric customers and 3.3 million gas customers. Since Trump took office, gas and electric utilities have raised or sought to increase bills by more than $90 billion, affecting more than 111.5 million electric customers and nearly 55.5 million gas customers across 49 states and Washington, D.C.

Climate Power Michigan Director Tom Lenard issued the following statement:

“These unrelenting rate hikes from utilities can be placed right at the feet of Donald Trump and every Michigan Republican in Congress who refuses to stand up to him. The war in Iran and the war on clean energy are crushing Michigan families. And utility companies like DTE rake in the profit while paying nothing in taxes. Energy costs more, gas costs more, food costs more, and there’s no relief in sight.”
