REPUBLICANS HAVE SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT
Instead of working with Democrats to lower costs and protect health care, Trump and Republicans chose chaos. They shut down the government — putting working families, federal employees, and millions of Americans at risk, while their billionaire friends stay insulated from the consequences.
Why did this happen?
Trump walked away from bipartisan talks, taunted Democratic leaders in meetings meant for negotiation, and openly threatened to “do things during the shutdown that are irreversible.” Instead of governing, Republicans chose to create a crisis.
Here’s the reality:
- This shutdown was never about fiscal responsibility. Trump and his allies have no problem handing out billions in tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations.
- It’s about using working families as leverage — forcing people to go without paychecks and threatening healthcare programs to get his way.
- Republicans see the shutdown as a political weapon. By manufacturing chaos, they hope to distract from skyrocketing costs that their own policies — from tariffs to utility hikes — have already created.
Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House. They are responsible. They could end this shutdown TODAY by passing a bipartisan deal that protects healthcare and reins in Trump’s reckless schemes. But they won’t unless we force them to.
What’s really happening?
Here are the facts:
- The Trump Shutdown hurts all of us. From air travel to food safety inspections, critical services are delayed or disrupted.
- Trump has been running a “rolling shutdown” since day one. He’s fired record numbers of federal workers and gutted entire departments, weakening services millions rely on. And he’s using the shutdown as an excuse to lay off even more federal employees.
- “Essential” federal workers are forced to work without pay.
- Airports are already feeling the strain: TSA agents and air traffic controllers are being forced to work without pay, creating staff shortages, long delays, and growing safety concerns for travelers.
- The FDA’s food safety efforts, including policy work to help prevent foodborne illnesses and diet-related diseases, have halted.
- Active and retired military families paychecks have not been issued for over a week.
- Clean air and water protections are at a standstill. EPA’s inspections and permit reviews are suspended, putting communities at risk of contaminated water, polluted air, and higher health risks. Furloughs have already begun to hit the EPA, with over 13,000 roles in flux.
- National parks and public lands will suffer. Like past shutdowns, staffing shortages mean trash piling up and ecological damage. The National Parks Conservation Association called for Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to close all of the National Parks to prevent “irreparable damage” brought on by previous shutdowns.
- Disaster preparedness is at risk. Agencies like FEMA and NOAA are already stretched thin. Trump has dismantled disaster relief and weather monitoring programs, and additional staffing constraints leaves communities unprepared for hurricanes, wildfires, and extreme weather.
- Essential programs face disruption. Food programs like WIC (nutrition aid for women and children) and SNAP could see delays or interruptions if the shutdown drags on, hitting the most vulnerable families first.
