After Hurricane Milton dropped 5-20 inches of rain in a matter of hours, central and northern Florida lakes and rivers may continue to remain above flood stage for weeks and perhaps months.
The amount of rain that Milton dumped on the central and northern parts of the Florida Peninsula is equivalent to five to 10 times the historical average rainfall for October in many cases.
Even after floodwaters subside from Hurricane Helene and Milton, the stress and anxiety can lead to lingering mental health challenges.
As of Monday, Duke Energy Florida has completed power restoration for over 95% of customers in Brevard, Citrus, Hernando, Highlands, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia counties post-Hurricane Milton.
Citrus growers are beginning to assess the impacts of Hurricane Milton and begin the recovery process.

In Idaho, 13 fires have burned 498,296 acres as of Monday.
In Montana, 4 fires have burned 12,882 acres as of Monday.
In Nevada, 1 fire has burned 25,885 acres as of Monday.
In Oregon, 9 fires have burned 247,403 as of Monday.
In Utah, 2 fires have burned 31,108 acres as of Monday.

Dangerous, record-breaking heat is ongoing in the West, with the temperature in Phoenix, Arizona, reaching triple digits every day for the last three weeks.
Over the weekend, temperatures soared to the 90s in cities including Las Vegas, Nevada, Austin and Dallas, Texas, and Little Rock, Arkansas.
Phoenix climbed over a scorching 110 degrees on 80 days in 2024 — shattering the record set last year with 55 days of temperatures over 110 degrees.
A September 2024 study found that heat exposure in prisons disproportionately raises health risks, impacts people of color, and challenges infrastructure design, especially in older prisons where large system updates aren’t possible.
