As of Monday, 26 people remain unaccounted for in hard-hit North Carolina, weeks after the devastation unleashed by Hurricane Helene.
North Carolina Gov. Cooper said FEMA has had 1,400 staff on the ground and has registered 206,000 people for individual assistance, and distributed $124 million directly to people who need it.
The Asheville school district will reopen Oct. 28 with two shortened days and plans a return to full days Oct. 30, more than a month since Tropical Storm Helene devastated areas of Western North Carolina.
- Since Hurricane Helene hit, elementary students missed 115.52 hours of school and middle and high schoolers missed 123.5 hours.
At least two people have died, and at least 290 people were rescued from severe flooding in New Mexico.
