Hurricanes And Tropical Storms

• More than 1.3 million homes and businesses across the region are still without power after Beryl slammed into the Gulf Coast as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday.
  • As residents try to cool their homes with generators, at least two people have died in Harris County from carbon monoxide poisoning and fire departments have received more than 200 carbon monoxide poisoning calls in 24 hours.
  • Senior care facilities and residents who rely on electric medical devices are particularly at risk as power outages stretch through at least the end of the week.
• One year after facing catastrophic flooding, the remnants of Hurricane Beryl dumped heavy rain on Vermont, causing flooding that washed away an apartment building, knocked out bridges, and cut off towns.
  • After heavy rain that started Wednesday and persisted into Thursday, roads were flooded, washed out, or covered with debris.
  • At least one person died.
  • In Plainfield, residents of a six-unit apartment building had only 15 minutes to evacuate before the entire structure was swept away by floodwaters. 
  • Floodwaters also took out at least seven bridges and left many roads impassable and people stranded.
• Flash flood warnings were in effect Thursday morning from northern New York to central Maine.

• As of Thursday, 74 large active wildfires have burned 681,569 acres across AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NV, NJ, NM, OR, UT, WA, and WY. This year to date, 23,676 wildfires have burned 2,901,393 acres across the country.
• In Alaska, 35 fires have burned 480,589 acres as of Thursday. 
• In Arizona, 5 fires have burned 11,698 acres as of Thursday.
• In California, 9 fires have burned 61,025 acres as of Thursday. 
• In Colorado, 1 fire has burned 1,310 acres as of Thursday. 
• In Nevada, 2 fires have burned 18,371 acres as of Thursday.
• In New Mexico, 6 fires have burned 38,394 acres as of Thursday.
• In Oregon, 7 fires have burned 19,468 acres as of Thursday.
• In Washington, 2 fires have burned 12,366 acres as of Thursday.

Extreme Heat

• More than 53 million people across the country were under extreme heat alerts, including much of California, Nevada, parts of Arizona, and Utah.
• Triple-digit temperatures are expected across California, Nevada, Arizona and into the Rockies until at least Sunday.
• At least 28 heat-related deaths in the West have been reported since July 1.
