Statement from Climate Power en Acción on Trump’s FY2027 Budget

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration’s FY 2027 budget, released today, takes direct aim at climate policy and renewable energy. Among its most damaging provisions is a proposal to cut the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget to $4.2 billion, a historic low not seen since the Reagan era, with specific cuts to programs and research grants that disproportionately affect Latino communities.
Latino communities are on the front lines of the climate crisis. Extreme heat, flooding, and worsening air pollution hit Latino neighborhoods harder and more frequently, and these are the same communities that often have seen the least investment in climate resilience and clean energy infrastructure. Clean energy is also an economic issue: affordable, accessible clean energy programs have been among the few tools helping working Latino families manage rising household energy costs. This budget proposes to eliminate LIHEAP, the federal program that helps approximately 6 million low-income households heat and cool their homes, stripping away one of the last remaining lifelines for families already struggling to keep the lights on. Gutting these investments does not just set back climate progress; it deepens an affordability crisis that Latino families are already struggling to survive.
In response to the release of the requested budget, the Managing Director of Climate Power en Acción, Elice Rojas-Cruz, issued the following statement:
“The Trump administration’s continued efforts to undermine clean energy and programs that address the climate crisis should concern every American. Labeling any resource spent on addressing the environmental injustices in our country as ‘wasteful’ is precisely a reflection of how this administration thinks of our communities. With elections coming up, Congress would be wise to view this budget request as nothing short of what it is: an insult. Elected officials who support these cuts will have to answer for that decision come November.”
