Washington, DC – Energy companies have been announcing massive Q2 profits in recent weeks, raking in billions of dollars as American families face rate hikes as high as $28 per month. An analysis from Climate Power and the Center for American Progress Action Fund found that Trump policies have cost the average American family at least $2,000, including $213 in skyrocketing energy costs.
Congressional Republicans rubber stamped Trump’s war on clean energy, taking affordable, reliable energy options off the grid and squeezing supply as demand skyrockets. Now, Americans are choosing between filling up their tanks and keeping the lights on thanks to Trump and congressional Republicans’ reckless energy policies.
Wisconsin
- The Public Service Commission approved a $1.78 million rate hike requested by Sun Prairie Utilities, which would increase average residential customers’ monthly electric bill by 25 cents per month.
Nevada
- Boulder City posted a legal notice announcing a proposal to raise utility rates by 15% over the next three years, including a 5% increase in electric rates for the average residential customer. This would result in a total electric bill increase of $1.97 per month by 2029.
- Southwest Gas filed a 12% rate hike request, estimated to raise the average monthly residential gas bill by roughly $7.
Alabama
- The Athens City Council approved an electric rate hike that would increase the monthly charge for the average residential customer from $18 to $20 in November 2026, followed by another increase from $20 to $22 in October 2027.
Arkansas
- Entergy Arkansas sought approval for its first major rate increase in 10 years, with most residential customers estimated to face a 1% overall rate increase.
Kansas
- The Kansas Corporation Commission approved a unanimous settlement agreement with Kansas Empire District Electric Co. for an $8.775 million base rate hike that would increase the average residential electric bill by roughly $28 a month over the following two years.
Connecticut
- Eversource Energy filed an application with the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority to approve its $1.25 billion plan to replace electric meters in its Connecticut service territory with smart meters, with costs set to be recovered through the delivery portion of customers’ electric bills.
Rhode Island
- Rhode Island Energy proposed a 15% increase in electric supply rates for the upcoming winter, which would increase the typical residential customer’s monthly electric bill by roughly $12.
Washington
- The Seattle City Council approved City Light’s 9.5% annual electric rate hike over two years that would cause the average residential customer to pay a total of $20 more per month once both rate hikes took effect.
- The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission approved Northwest Natural Gas’ rate hike request, with some residential customers estimated to see their bills rise by $12.81 starting Aug. 1, 2026.
- Additional increases of $4.94 were scheduled to take effect Aug. 1, 2027, and $5.24 on Aug. 1, 2028.
California
- The Redwood Coast Energy Authority’s Board of Directors approved a $26 million rate increase that was estimated to increase the average monthly electricity bill by roughly $2 a month.
Oregon
- PacifiCorp filed a 10.8% residential rate increase, estimated to raise the average monthly residential electric bill by 2%, or $3.12.
- Portland General Electric announced it would file a general rate case with the Oregon Public Utility Commission seeking an overall 4.8% increase estimated to raise the monthly electric bill for a typical customer using 780 kilowatt-hours by roughly $8.33.
