Rep. Tom Tiffany Wants to Restrict How Rural Landowners Can Profit From Their Own Land

Madison, WI – Congressman Tom Tiffany held a town hall in Barron County last weekend where he pushed his expensive, pro-energy-dependence agenda on residents. Rep. Tiffany raised false concerns among rural residents looking to make money by leasing their farmland for locally produced clean energy. Meanwhile, Wisconsin farmers are struggling to make ends meet, and bankruptcy filings among farmers in Wisconsin increased eightfold from 2024 to 2025.

LIE: “Intermittent sources of power, like wind and solar, are driving up the cost of electricity.”

FACT: Renewable energy continues to be the cheapest new energy generation to build, according to a recently published Lazard report.

FACT: States that have experienced the largest increases in wind and solar generation have not seen electricity rates grow faster than average, with several leaders in clean energy growth actually seeing residential electricity costs rise slower than inflation.

FACT: Renewables aren’t vulnerable to fluctuating fuel prices and other cost uncertainties tied to fossil fuels, like the Iran war. Natural gas price volatility is a larger driver of electricity price spikes – the states most reliant on natural gas for electricity had the highest rate of retail price increases since 2020.

TRUTH: Tiffany continues to support a war and policies that are raising prices on hard-working farmers. 

FACT: Wisconsin set a new record for diesel prices this past spring, reaching $5.87 a gallon as the war in Iran continues. 

FACT: The average price of fertilizer nationally increased by 45% this past growing season. 70% of farmers nationwide said they couldn’t afford all the fertilizer they needed, forcing many to make difficult choices of planting different crops or facing lower yields. 

FACT: As of May 2026, Wisconsin’s average residential electricity price was 19.74 cents/kWh, up 8% from the year prior. Since Trump took office, Wisconsinites’ household electricity costs have increased by 14%.
