Where’s Whatley: Michael Whatley Runs Away from Questions About Runaway Costs

Raleigh, NC — GOP Senate Candidate Michael Whatley recently dodged reporters during a recent campaign stop when asked about his plans for bringing down costs for North Carolina families, even though he was given the questions “more than 24 hours” beforehand.
Meanwhile, recent research from the Center for American Progress Action Fund and Climate Power shows just how much Trump’s policies—which Whatley supports—are costing North Carolinians:
- One year after the GOP budget bill was signed into law, Trump’s policies have raised costs for North Carolina families by $1,964 per household through the first half of 2026.
- For families that buy health care coverage through the ACA marketplace, that total climbs to $3,477. By the end of 2026, those totals could grow to $3,040 and $6,065, respectively.
- Trump’s war of choice in Iran and efforts to block clean energy have raised gasoline and utility costs in North Carolina by $390. By the end of 2026, those additional energy costs could grow to $857 if costs continue to rise at the same rate.
Climate Power’s North Carolina State Director, Terryn Hall:
“Michael Whatley running away from questions about his plans to improve the economy shows he doesn’t actually care about the people of North Carolina. North Carolina families deserve leaders who will stand for them, not run at the slightest signs of pressure.”
