Will Lawrence Triumphs Over Tom Barrett: Trump and Republicans’ Disastrous Energy Policy Cost Them Election

LANSING, MI— Tonight, Democrat Will Lawrence defeated Republican Tom Barrett in a historic victory for the people of mid-Michigan. By electing Lawrence to Congress, Michiganders made their disapproval of Trump and Republicans’ energy policy known: from the war in Iran that is driving up gas and diesel prices, to the clean energy cuts and data centers with no guardrails that drove up utility bills.
Time and time again, Republicans like Barrett blocked the path to cheaper, faster, cleaner energy, and now mid-Michigan families and businesses are paying for it three times over — at the pump, on their utility bills, and through the data centers polluting their communities. Lawrence will tackle corporate greed and pollution, put guardrails on utility bill-raising, polluting data centers, and lower utility costs by investing in affordable clean energy.
Lawrence laid out his vision when he said in a recent interview: “So the work continues of ensuring that we can stabilize the climate, protect Michigan’s water, protect our land, which we love, and create good jobs in the process of doing that because we can have a robust and dynamic economy, building green energy, restoring our ecosystems, protecting our water, and we need to invest in that so that we can all protect the Michigan that we love and have a good life doing it.”
“No one has been a bigger champion of cleaner, cheaper renewable energy and holding data center developers accountable than Will Lawrence, and tonight mid-Michigan voters affirmed that by choosing him to be our voice in Congress,” said Climate Power’s Michigan Director Tom Lenard. “Tom Barrett didn’t show up when it mattered most and stood with Trump. That cost him tonight. Will’s going to get busy lowering costs, protecting our air and water, and taking on the corporate special interests.”
