30 Arizona Nonprofits Urge Congress to Protect Clean Energy and Environmental Justice Investments

PHOENIX– Today, 30 Arizona-based organizations are calling on Arizona’s U.S. senators, Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego, to stand strong and protect transformative clean energy, energy efficiency, and environmental justice investments established under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). In a letter sent to the senators, the diverse group of nonprofits highlighted the powerful economic, public health, and community development impacts of these investments—and warned of the serious risks of reversing this progress on Arizona’s clean energy economy.
“These laws are not just policies—they are fueling economic growth and delivering real benefits to Arizonans,” the letter states.
Since the IRA’s passage in 2022, Arizona has emerged as a national leader in clean energy investment, attracting over $13 billion in new projects and creating more than 13,000 good-paying jobs. These investments have supported projects in every corner of the state—from rural towns to tribal lands—bringing essential infrastructure upgrades, stable employment, and improved public health outcomes.
Yet, recent political efforts to freeze or reverse clean energy programs threaten to undermine this progress. Arizona communities—especially low-income, tribal, and rural areas—stand to lose out on $4.4 billion in announced investments and over 3,000 clean energy jobs. Additionally, more than $2.2 billion in rural projects and over 1,500 jobs are at risk.
Beyond the economic benefits, clean energy is helping Arizona tackle its most urgent climate challenges. Solar and wind reduce water use and pollution compared to fossil fuels—critical in a state facing worsening drought, extreme heat, and wildfires. Clean energy also reduces monthly utility bills, with projected savings across Arizona of nearly $959 million by 2035 if current programs are maintained.
A recent poll from the American Lung Association found that 3 out of 4 Arizona voters (77%) support the transition to renewable energy, showing widespread public support for continuing clean energy investments.
The nonprofits are urging Arizona’s U.S. senators to stand firm in support of these vital programs—and to keep the state on track as a national leader in the clean energy economy. Arizona has already seen the promise of a clean energy future take root—from good-paying jobs to healthier communities. Rolling back these investments would turn our backs on the people and places that need them most.
