Arizonans’ Electricity Bills Are Spiking, And Juan Ciscomani Voted to Make It Worse

TUCSON, AZ—Newly released data from the EIA shows that national household electricity prices have surged 18% since Donald Trump took office in January 2025, and Arizona families are feeling the full weight of it. The state led the entire nation in electricity consumption growth in March 2026, with retail sales up 19.4% year-over-year — driven by an explosion of data centers, record-breaking heat, and an energy grid straining to keep up.
In Tucson, families could very soon see an increase in their electricity costs with Tucson Electric Power (TEP) requesting a 13% rate hike—partly to cover $1.7 billion in infrastructure costs tied to data center expansion. Clean energy is the fastest and cheapest path to relief, but Congressman Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) voted to gut it. His vote for HR1 directly threatened $557 million in clean energy investments and 245 good-paying jobs in his own district, after he had publicly pledged to protect them.
As utility bills climb, Trump’s war of choice in Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, spiked global oil prices, and pushed the cost of gasoline and diesel to record highs. With the midterms less than six months away, Trump has dismissed voters’ concerns over rising energy costs, despite the fact that energy cost concerns are at the highest level since 2008, tying housing as the second biggest affordability concern.
Climate Power Arizona State Director Diali Avila issued the following statement:
“Arizona families are feeling the brunt of this Trump-made energy crisis endorsed by Juan Ciscomani. Our leaders should be focused on bringing costs down, not exacerbating the problem. The Trump administration’s approach to clean energy is the exact opposite of what is needed at this moment as folks struggle to afford to cool their homes and put food on the table.”
Trump, Ciscomani, and Congressional Republicans have made life more expensive for everyday Americans, even while their ultra-wealthy donors rake in billions:
- Clean energy is the least expensive and quickest power source to bring online and costs 30 to 60 percent less than new gas plants to produce the same amount of electricity.
- Attacks on clean energy have already taken nearly 25 GW of planned generation off the grid. Trump’s crusade to block wind and solar power could nearly double the rate hikes and broader inflation from data center buildout.
- Thanks to Trump’s war of choice in Iran, the average price of gas spiked by 50%, reaching $4.45 a gallon. Americans have spent nearly $50 billion more at the pump since the start of the war. Meanwhile, Big Oil companies have raked in more than $40 billion in profits in Q1.
