As Hurricane Isaias Is Expected to Make Landfall, Trump Has Left Communities Unprepared

Washington, DC – Over the next 24 hours, Hurricane Isaias, the first Atlantic hurricane of the year, is expected to make landfall along the Gulf Coast. Communities along the storm’s path are scrambling to prepare, but Donald Trump has gutted our forecasting capabilities and federal disaster response, putting lives at risk. Trump’s cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service have jeopardized critical forecasts that people rely on to keep their families safe during hurricanes. Trump also gutted the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), making it more difficult and more expensive for communities to recover from hurricanes and other extreme weather events. Meanwhile, Trump’s war of choice in Iran has driven up gas prices to $4.35 per gallon nationally, making it more expensive for families in the storm’s path who are under evacuation orders to get to safety.

At the same time, Trump is continuing to play politics with disaster aid and using relief funds as a political tool as he campaigns for the midterm elections. This week, Trump rejected aid to Illinois, days after bragging at a campaign rally for Republican Senator Jon Husted about the aid he had approved for Ohio. Both disaster requests were from severe storms and tornadoes that hit the states in August 2026.
