Dr. Abdul El-Sayed Triumphs Over Mike Rogers: Trump and Republicans’ Disastrous Energy Policy Cost Them Election

LANSING, MI— Tonight, Democrat Dr. Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in a historic victory for the people of Michigan. By electing El-Sayed to the Senate, Michiganders made their disapproval of Trump and Republicans’ energy policy known: from the war in Iran that is driving up gas and diesel prices, to the clean energy cuts and data centers with no guardrails that drove up utility bills.
Time and time again, Rogers cheered on Republican policies that blocked the path to cheaper, faster, cleaner energy, and Michigan families and businesses have been paying for it three times over — at the pump, on their utility bills, and through the data centers polluting their communities. El-Sayed will tackle corporate greed and pollution, put guardrails on utility bill-raising, polluting data centers, and lower utility costs by investing in affordable clean energy.
As El-Sayed pointed out at a recent event: “We have all the technology we need to drop the price of electricity via renewable energy. We just don’t invest in it. And all of those renewable energy investments-guess what-they create really great jobs. It turns out renewable energy requires you to manufacture stuff, and here in Michigan, we’re really good at manufacturing stuff.”
“Mike Rogers’ campaign Hail Mary trying to separate himself from Trump on the costly Iran War and Canadian trade tariff war fell flat because Michigan voters aren’t stupid,” said Climate Power’s Michigan Director Tom Lenard. “Abdul El-Sayed has spent his whole career fighting for cleaner, cheaper renewable energy and healthier communities, and tonight he overcame the onslaught of donations from wealthy special interests like Elon Musk and the oil, gas, and utility industries. Now he’ll deliver a more affordable future for Michigan families.”
