WASHINGTON, D.C. – As Kamala Harris heads to Michigan to rally alongside autoworkers, Trump is up with another ad riddled with lies about her record. Trump let good-paying auto manufacturing jobs go overseas during his presidency, a fact he really wants Michigan voters to forget. Kamala Harris cast the tie-breaking vote for the clean energy plan, lowering costs, and creating over 20,000 good-paying jobs in the state.
Now Donald Trump is desperately trying to lie to cover for his abysmal record. As Harris heads to Michigan, here are the facts:
TRUTH: Trump sent manufacturing jobs overseas as president.
FACT: Trump and Vance are threatening to halt a $500 million investment in a Lansing GM plant that would retain 650 jobs and create 50 new jobs.
FACT: While Donald Trump was president, his hostility towards the clean energy industry allowed China to pull ahead in EV and clean energy manufacturing.
FACT: Despite Trump’s repeated lies about “saving” the U.S. auto industry, the U.S. auto industry lost more than 86,000 jobs under Donald Trump.
FACT: History casts doubt on Donald Trump’s auto industry promises
FACT: Bloomberg: “The Offshoring of U.S. Jobs Increased on Trump’s Watch”
FACT: Trump’s agenda would “end up helping China, economists say, by jeopardizing hundreds of billions of dollars in manufacturing investments that have already been made in the United States and sending that work back to other countries, including China.”
FACT: Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, says that Trump’s promise to repeal the clean energy plan “would be a blow to manufacturing.” … “China would certainly benefit.”
FACT: This week, Trump insulted auto workers, saying that “a child” could do their jobs.
FACT: Rolling Stone: “Trump’s Tax Plan Is Another Giant Boon for the Wealthy”
LIE: “Kamala Harris supports EV mandates, killing Michigan jobs.”
FACT: Vice President Harris cast the tie-breaking vote for the clean energy plan that “encouraged onshoring of clean energy industries,” and has created more than 330,000 jobs, including 21,748 in Michigan.
FACT: Clean energy jobs are growing at double the rate of overall jobs, and their unionization rates are higher than those of the broader energy industry.
FACT: A recent University of Michigan study of current EV plants found that EV production requires three times as many employees as traditional auto plants. Investing in EV production creates good-paying manufacturing jobs.
LIE: “She wants to end all gas-powered cars.”
FACT: Kamala Harris told a crowd in Detroit on October 4, “I will never tell you what kind of car you have to drive.”
FACT: The New York Times, Politifact, Factcheck.org, and NPR agree: there is no gas car ban. The Los Angeles Times headlined their editorial on the topic: “Trump and oil companies are lying to you about electric cars to serve their own interests.”
