GOP Governor Hopeful, Rep. Tom Tiffany Brags About Killing Energy Projects, Contributing to Rising Prices

Madison, WI – Congressman Tom Tiffany joined the Jay Weber Podcast this past weekend to brag about being a leader in canceling wind and solar subsidies through the Republican budget bill signed just over a year ago. The fact is that these canceled subsidies have contributed to prices skyrocketing since Trump took office: according to a recent report, Wisconsin families spent $2,035 more per household in the first half of 2026. Rep. Tom Tiffany has voted 12 times in favor of Trump’s Iran war and policies that raised the cost of gasoline, electricity, and tariff-affected goods for Wisconsin families.
LIE: “[Solar and wind] have driven up our power rates, over $2 billion of increases in Wisconsin here alone, destroying our farmland”
FACT: Solar only covers 0.07% of prime farmland in Wisconsin, compared to 0.30% covered by golf courses.
FACT: Renewable energy continues to be the cheapest new energy generation to build, according to a recently published report.
FACT: Wisconsin spends approximately $14 billion annually to purchase fossil fuels from out-of-state.
TRUTH: The Republican budget bill is raising energy prices.
FACT: As of April 2026, Wisconsin’s average residential electricity price was 19.21 cents/kWh, up 5.49% from the year prior. Since Trump took office, Wisconsinites’ household electricity costs have increased by 10.66%.
FACT: Energy Innovation, a nonpartisan think tank, found that the Republican budget bill will lead to energy price increases of $95 by 2030 and $300 by 2035 in Wisconsin. The law is projected to reduce Wisconsin’s generation capacity by 17 GW, threatening grid reliability and higher costs as energy demand rises.
FACT: A new Energy Innovation study found federal policies enacted by the Trump Administration and the GOP-held Congress will lead households nationwide to pay $650 billion more for energy, with average household energy costs rising by $460 in 2035 and $490 in 2040.
