Austin, TX – Last week, Inside Climate News examined electricity generation data for 2024 released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Texas remained on top in power production, leading the country in generation from wind energy and second in utility-scale solar.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Texas generated 169,442 gigawatt-hours from wind, utility-scale solar and small-scale solar in 2024, a significant amount more than California in second place with 92,316 gigawatt-hours.
- Texas’ clean energy dominance began in the late 2000s to early 2010s with the growth of wind power generation.
- What makes the Texas power grid unique is developers can easily obtain permits to start projects and connect to the grid, which has driven the boost in clean energy.
- According to the article’s author, Dan Gearino, “Some Texas lawmakers would like to make it more difficult to build renewable energy and energy storage in the state, which is in part to stifle a competitor of oil and gas. This wouldn’t make much sense in terms of building the economy or having a reliable electricity grid. If Texas’ leaders can just stay out of their own way, the state is on track to dominate the renewable energy economy for generations to come.”
- The article emphasizes the importance of keeping federal government data about energy production accessible to encourage innovation and accountability in the energy marketplace and better serve consumers.
