“It’s Too Much, Tom”: Barrett and Wright are Wrong on Energy Prices

Lansing, Mich. – Following an event in Lansing this afternoon during which Rep. Tom Barrett and U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright tried to misdirect the public and press about energy costs, Climate Power helped set the record straight.
Climate Power Michigan Director Tom Lenard issued the following statement:
“Barrett and Wright are wrong on energy prices. Despite their spin, families in mid-Michigan are paying too much for electricity, too much for gas and diesel, too much for everything thanks to the OBBBA, inflation and tariffs. And while they touted a $1.6 billion loan to DTE as a win for consumers, Michiganders deserve answers about when the savings will actually show up on their monthly bills. At a time when nearly 200,000 Michigan households are behind on their utility bills and DTE continues to seek additional rate increases, families need real relief, not more loans to a utility that hikes our rates and has not paid federal taxes in twelve years. It’s too much, Tom.”
Here are just a few ways Michiganders are worse off thanks to Trump and Barrett:
- Since Trump’s war started, the price of gas has increased by more than 40% in Michigan.
- Since Trump took office, average household electricity prices in Michigan have increased by nearly 15%.
- Nearly 200,000 households in Michigan are behind on their utility bills, with an average debt of $865.
- Trump has jeopardized over 7,900 clean energy jobs and over $1.1 billion in investment in Michigan.
