The poll, conducted by Hart Research, confirms energy costs are two of voters’ top-three most important voting issues ahead of the midterms
Washington, DC – With less than three weeks to Election Day, new polling from Hart Research released today shows that battleground district voters blame Republicans and their policies for worsening energy prices, a top voting issue in the midterm elections.
Energy costs are two of voters’ top-three most important voting issues ahead of the midterms, as voters name the cost of gas (46%) and utilities (37%) as their most important issues following grocery costs (68%). Grocery prices are up due to rising shipping and diesel prices as a result of Trump and Republicans’ war in Iran.
Trump and Republicans’ failed energy policy has created an increasingly dissatisfied coalition of voters, and has given Democrats a clear advantage in critical battleground races. Trump and Republicans promised to cut energy prices in half. Instead, they gutted clean energy, doubled down on oil and gas to enrich themselves and their donors, and started a war in Iran, causing energy prices to skyrocket. As a result, voters now trust Democrats to lower energy prices and improve energy policy in this election. Since the beginning of this year, Democrats have gained voters’ trust to lower utility bills (+15), lower the cost of gas and diesel (+5), and have a long-term plan to meet the country’s energy needs (+16).
The survey, conducted in partnership with Climate Power, EDF Action, League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, NRDC Action Fund, and the Utility Action Alliance, was conducted October 5-October 8 with 1,026 registered voters across 61 House districts which the Cook Political Report rates as Lean D, Toss Up, Lean R, or Likely R.
