NEW POLLING: Home Insurance Costs Are Straining Household Budgets in Arizona

PHOENIX—As more frequent and costly extreme weather fuels a nationwide home insurance crisis, Climate Power and the Insurance Fairness Project released new polling on how homeowners and renters are impacted in five key states, including Arizona. Key findings of the poll include:
- 75% of Arizonans are concerned about home insurance costs rising in the next 3 years.
- 48% of Arizonans say cost is their biggest concern with home insurance coverage.
- 27% of Arizonans have had to put off a purchase or expense due to insurance costs.
- 52% of Arizonans are concerned insurance costs will impact housing decisions.
- Latinos expressed the highest concern about rising premiums of any demographic group measured (Net Concern +74).
Climate change is pushing property insurance companies to raise rates and cancel policies in Arizona. Between 2020 and 2025, home insurance rates in the Copper State increased by 71%. The increasing risk of wildfires in the state is a major driver of Arizona’s home insurance crisis. Trump’s cuts to the U.S. Forest Service that hinder wildfire response, alongside his far-reaching tariffs, will make Arizona’s home insurance crisis even worse.
In Phoenix, 6% of homeowners are uninsured, and about 8% of all homeowners statewide are uninsured. Nationally, 14% of Latino homeowners and 11% of Black homeowners do not have home insurance, compared with 6% of white homeowners. Black and Latino communities are also more likely to live in disaster-prone areas and are disproportionately impacted by steep increases in insurance premiums.
“Extreme weather is fueling Arizona’s home insurance crisis, and Trump’s policies are only making it worse,” said Climate Power Arizona Director Diali Avila. “This poll is just the latest example of what we already know: Arizonans are struggling with the cost of living. We need leaders who will take action to make it easier for Arizonans to buy groceries, fill their cars with gas, and insure their homes.”
