NEW REPORT: 401 Energy Projects Canceled As Electricity Prices Spike By 3x the Rate of Inflation On Trump’s Watch

New report from Climate Power shows that actions by Trump and congressional Republicans have kept enough energy capacity to power 21.9 million homes off the grid 

Electricity prices have spiked by as much as 18% since Trump took office

Washington, DC – With the midterm elections less than 70 days away, Americans are facing skyrocketing energy costs thanks to Trump and congressional Republicans. Climate Power’s August Energy Crisis Snapshot shows that 401 clean energy projects have been canceled or stalled since Trump took office, putting 145,966 jobs on the chopping block and squeezing energy supply as demand from data centers soars.

Trump and congressional Republicans’ attacks on clean energy come as rising energy costs become a key issue in the midterm elections. According to Gallup, concerns about rising energy costs have increased by 10 percentage points since last year, tying housing as the second biggest affordability concern for Americans. Instead of addressing those concerns, Trump and Republicans in Congress are propping up dirty, expensive coal and gas power, which will only increase utility bills even further. To make matters worse, Trump has spent nearly $4 billion in taxpayer funds to stop wind projects from being built. 

“Trump and congressional Republicans created an energy affordability crisis with their reckless attacks on clean energy and American families are footing the bill with soaring energy costs and fewer jobs,” said Climate Power Senior Advisor Jesse Lee. “Now, with the midterm elections fast approaching, Republicans in Congress are desperately trying to pretend like they care about skyrocketing utility bills in a last-ditch effort to keep their jobs. Unfortunately for them, they’ve happily rubber-stamped Trump’s disastrous energy policies and this November, they’re going to pay the price at the ballot box.” 

The report’s findings include: 

• Since Trump took office, household electric bills have risen by as much as 18%, while residential natural gas prices have increased by 12% between May 2024 and May 2026. Trump’s war of choice in Iran is sending oil, diesel, and jet fuel prices skyrocketing – yet his priority is spending nearly $4 billion in taxpayer dollars to stop homegrown clean energy production that would protect Americans from global oil shocks.
• Donald Trump and congressional Republicans started this energy crisis with their attacks on clean energy projects, and are now accelerating it with their war of choice in Iran. These canceled projects would have produced enough electricity to power the equivalent of 21.9 million homes. Without them, utility costs have gone through the roof, factories are closing down, and we are more dependent on volatile foreign oil. These actions are also dramatically increasing the pollution of our air and water. 
• Nearly 146,000 jobs have already been lost or stalled in the clean energy sector since Trump’s election. With rising energy demand driven by data centers and extreme heat, gutting clean energy is taking critical production offline and raising costs for Americans. 
• Since Trump took office, gas and electric utilities have raised or sought to increase bills by more than $100 billion, affecting more than 116 million electric utility customers and more than 59 million natural gas customers across 49 states and the District of Columbia.
