REPORT: Trump’s Energy Crisis Is Spiking Utility Costs Across the Country

Washington, D.C. – Household electric bills are up 10 percent nationally since Trump took office, and are poised to spike even further. Republicans’ budget bill took a “sledgehammer” to clean energy sources, fueling an energy crisis of skyrocketing utility bills just as demand for energy surges from data centers. A new report from Climate Power details how Trump’s Republican Rate Hike is saddling Americans with higher energy costs, a weaker electric grid, and job losses. This will only get worse after last week’s guidance from the Trump Treasury Department to further sabotage solar and wind tax credits. 

Donald Trump and Republicans are creating a self-inflicted energy crisis, sending utility costs through the roof, and closing down factories, all to give a massive tax break to oil and gas billionaires. 

“Republicans are fueling an energy crisis and inflicting a massive utility bill hike on Americans across the country,” said Climate Power senior advisor Jesse Lee. “This is nothing short of a betrayal of their own voters. Families are losing jobs while their bills climb, all because Republicans would rather protect their donors than lower costs. This report details just how badly this bill is hurting Americans – and we’re going to make sure they know who to blame when they open higher utility bills this month.”

The report’s findings include:

Over 64,000 jobs have already been lost or stalled in the clean energy sector since Trump’s election. With rising energy demand driven by AI and extreme heat, gutting clean energy is already taking critical production offline and increasing costs for consumers. Americans across the nation are already seeing their utility costs skyrocket. The Republican Rate Hike will increase the average family’s energy bill by $130 annually by 2030 and $170 annually by 2035, with some states expected to see their bills rise by over $400 per year in the next decade.

Trump’s energy crisis is disproportionately hurting congressional districts represented by Republicans: 

• 56 percent of lost or stalled jobs are located in congressional districts represented by Republicans in Congress.
• 52 percent of canceled projects are located in congressional districts represented by Republicans in Congress. 

Republicans’ budget bill is responsible for job losses across the energy sector: 

• All clean energy sectors have experienced job losses since Trump’s election.
• The clean technology and battery sectors have seen the highest number of cancellations.
• The wind sector experienced the highest job losses since Trump’s election, driven by the administration’s animosity toward the technology. 

Gutting clean energy is reducing our energy supply and fueling an energy crisis: 

• 13,939 megawatts of planned energy generation have been lost due to energy projects that were canceled or delayed since Trump’s election. 
• Over 8.4 million homes in the U.S. could be powered by canceled or delayed generation energy projects since Trump’s election.
