Roy Cooper Triumphs over Michael Whatley: Republicans’ Disastrous Energy Policy Cost Them Election

Raleigh, N.C. — Tonight Democrat Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley in a historic victory for the people of North Carolina. By electing Cooper to the Senate, North Carolinians made their disapproval of Republicans’ energy policy known: from the war in Iran that is driving up gas and diesel prices, to the clean energy cuts and data centers with no guardrails that drove up utility bills. According to an Elon University poll, a majority of North Carolina voters oppose the Iran conflict, which is raising oil and gas prices.
Time and time again, Republicans like Whatley supported Trump’s policies to block the path to cheaper, faster, cleaner energy, and Whatley himself has benefited from his connections to monopoly utilities, oil and gas, and corporate polluters. Now North Carolina families and businesses are paying for it three times over — at the pump, on their utility bills, and through the data centers polluting their communities. Cooper will tackle corporate greed and pollution, put guardrails on utility bill-raising, polluting data centers, and lower utility costs by investing in affordable clean energy.
Cooper said it best in this X post, “Many North Carolinians have been telling me they can’t afford such high costs at the grocery store, in the doctor’s office and on their utility bills. Leaders in DC must focus on helping people afford what they need, and I’m ready to do just that.”
“The people of North Carolina deserve leaders who are looking out for us and ensuring that we can afford to fill our gas tank and keep our lights on, and that’s why they elected Roy Cooper,” said Climate Power’s North Carolina State Director Terryn Hall. “Michael Whatley would’ve rubber-stamped Trump’s agenda at every turn, and now he’s paying the price. North Carolina families need relief from skyrocketing costs, and Roy Cooper will work to bring down costs for North Carolinians —not enrich oil and gas billionaires.”
