Sarah Trone Garriott Triumphs Over Zach Nunn: Republicans’ Disastrous Energy Policy Cost Them Election

DES MOINES, IA — Tonight, Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott defeated Republican Zach Nunn in a historic victory for the people of Iowa. By electing Trone Garriott to Congress, Iowans made their disapproval of Republicans’ energy policy known: from the war in Iran that is driving up gas and diesel prices, to the clean energy cuts and data centers with no guardrails that drove up utility bills. A CNN poll shows 74% of likely Iowa voters surveyed say Trump administration policies have increased the cost of living, with 70% saying current gas prices are a moderate to severe hardship and 55% saying tariffs are a bad thing for Iowa.
Time and time again, Republicans like Nunn blocked the path to cheaper, faster, cleaner energy, and now Iowa families and businesses are paying for it three times over — at the pump, on their utility bills, and through the data centers polluting their communities. Trone Garriott will tackle corporate greed and pollution, put guardrails on utility bill-raising, polluting data centers, and lower utility costs by investing in affordable clean energy.
Sarah Trone Garriott said it best on MS NOW, “The cost of living just keeps going up. So gas is now $4.40 a gallon and diesel is above $6 which is a new record high. And it’s because of the tariffs. It’s because of the war. Which my congressman [Zach Nunn] has repeatedly voted to support. People are angry and they want to change… He voted five times to support the war continuing. Twice, he was the deciding vote. And when Iowans complained about the rising costs, he said that it was worth it and that we need to grow a stronger spine. So Iowans will not forget that he is why we are in this position in this never ending war that is costing us so much.”
“The people of Iowa deserve leaders who are looking out for us and ensuring that we can afford to fill our gas tank and keep our lights on, and that’s why they elected Sarah Trone Garriott,” said Climate Power’s Western Hub Senior Director Tiffany Hsieh. “Zach Nunn and his fellow Republicans rubber-stamped Trump’s agenda at every turn, and now they’re paying the price. Iowans need relief from skyrocketing costs, and Sarah Trone Garriott will work to bring down costs for Iowans—not enrich oil and gas billionaires.”
