Trump Is Raising Costs for Disaster Survivors And Leaving Devastated Communities in the Lurch

Trump’s FEMA denied aid to Texas flood victims after saying that states would need to handle disasters on their own
Washington, DC – The Trump administration’s latest push to further gut FEMA by pushing the cost of recovery onto states is already impacting Americans who have been hit by extreme weather. Just this week, Trump denied a request for individual assistance for people impacted by the 2026 Texas floods. Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd both served on Trump’s FEMA Review Council, which recommended overhauling the agency and pushing the cost of recovery onto states. Now, they’re facing the consequences of their recommendations — with less federal aid, states and individuals are forced to bear the high cost of recovery alone. If Texans — whose Governor and Chief of Emergency Management are supportive of Trump and even served on his FEMA Review Council — aren’t getting the help they need after a disaster, no one will.
Climate Power Senior Advisor Mia Logan issued the following statement: “As Trump drastically cuts back disaster aid in the next year, we’re going to see more and more communities not getting the help they need after devastating extreme weather events. Climate disasters are getting more expensive every year, but Trump’s plan is to withhold federal aid — leaving families on the hook for the cost of rebuilding. States will not be able to make up the difference in funds fast enough, which will push the cost of recovery onto taxpayers. Trump is leading us into another affordability crisis, and Americans who are already in their most vulnerable moments will pay the price.”
