Trump and congressional Republicans have cost Americans at least $2,000 since he took office through skyrocketing gas prices, utility bills, health care premiums, and essential goods
Washington, DC – When the Republicans’ midterm convention kicks off this week, expect a heavy dose of economic revisionism. Trump and his party will desperately try to gaslight Americans by claiming the economy is booming, but the reality could not be more different: American consumers are paying record prices at the pump thanks to Trump’s war of choice in Iran, and utility bills are skyrocketing as Trump and Republicans take energy options off the grid. Here’s what they will conveniently leave out of their multi-million dollar PR stunt:
- What You Will Hear: “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation, I don’t think about anybody.” – President Trump
- What You Won’t Hear: The administration’s blanket tariff policies have cost American families, on average, $1,600 more on goods, including essential food products, forcing families to ration food and rely on pantries. At the same time, his war of choice in Iran spiked inflation above 4% for the first time in three years.
- What You Will Hear: “I inherited very, very high costs, and they’re all coming down now, the food, the groceries, it’s all coming down.” – President Trump
- What You Won’t Hear: Gas was $3.12 when Trump took office, and inflation was 2.5% and falling when Trump took office. Inflation is now back up and drivers just faced the highest Labor Day gas prices on record. To make matters worse, the average price of diesel hit an unprecedented record high of $5.90 per gallon, punishing an already struggling agricultural sector right as the fall harvest begins.
- What You Will Hear: “My Plan Will Cut Energy Prices In Half Or More Than That Within 12 Months Of Taking Office.” – President Trump
- What You Won’t Hear: The average family has paid $213 more for their utility bills since Trump took office for the second time in January 2025. Nationally, residential utility bills have spiked as much as 18%, accelerated by deep cuts to renewable energy tax credits in the GOP’s budget bill signed into law a year ago.
- What You Will Hear: “Don’t you want healthy children? […] And don’t you want the regulatory agencies to be free from corporate corruption?” – RFK Jr.
- What You Won’t Hear: Trump and his GOP allies are giving Big Tech and Big Oil free rein to build massive, polluting gas- and coal-powered data centers. At the same time, they’ve gutted pollution protections, exposing Americans to life-threatening toxins while stripping them of access to affordable, reliable health care. Their trillion-dollar health care cuts have cost families $1,497, forcing parents to choose between keeping their loved ones insured or putting food on the table.
- What You Will Hear: “The only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor. If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign…” – President Trump
- What You Won’t Hear: Courting big tech billionaires comes at the direct expense of American families and businesses. Recent polling reveals bipartisan backlash, with 73% of Michigan voters opposing current federal tax breaks and policies to speed up data center construction—including 67% of voters who otherwise view Trump favorably. Data centers built with clean energy are far more popular with voters than those built with oil and gas— as Trump and his administration are forcing through.
- GOP Mega Donors like Elon Musk are bankrolling candidates to the tune of at least $100M to nix data center regulation saying at the G20 last week, “you have to have an environment that’s relatively free of regulation, meaning that new things need to be default legal.”
- Trump’s EPA has gone so far as to exempt data center power plants from Clean Air Act protections – leaving Americans to fend for themselves.
Donald Trump and Republicans are attempting to put lipstick on an economy that is failing American families. While they hand out a blank check to corporate polluters, everyday Americans are stuck footing the bill for skyrocketing electricity rates and toxic air pollution. Come November, voters will remember that the Trump-GOP agenda was not one that lowered prices, but instead manufactured an affordability crisis they can not get us out of.
