World’s Worst Leader or World’s Richest Man—Whose Backing is More Important to the Mike Rogers Campaign?

Lansing, MI – Following last week’s Mike Rogers appearance in Dallas on the GOP convention stage to cement his loyalty to President Trump, news broke that Elon Musk’s PAC is ramping up spending to prop up his Senate campaign. Rogers previously told supporters that backing his campaign would help “protect” Musk, while disclosures show Rogers holds between $1.7 million and $2.6 million in companies positioned to benefit from AI and data center development. Musk also donated millions in Michigan 2024 campaigns to back Representatives like Tom Barrett and John James.
Possibly the only things less popular in Michigan right now than Donald Trump and Elon Musk are dirty data centers and energy policies that make everything more expensive:
- Trump continues pushing data center expansion without strong guardrails, threatening that opponents will end up “backwards and poor” and even easing pollution rules for them
- Elon Musk has faced criticism for building some of the dirtiest data centers in the country, recently saying that AI and data centers need to be “free of regulation” and their actions should be “presumed legal.”
- Trump’s attacks on clean energy are making energy more expensive. Thanks to his disastrous war, gas prices skyrocketed again in Michigan, and diesel is hitting record highs
- Multiple Michigan polls make it clear voters oppose these energy policies and are united against federal policies that give incentives to speed up data center development and avoid local control
Climate Power Michigan Director Tom Lenard issued the following statement:
“Pretending to be tough on data centers while raking in donations from the same guys getting rich off them and saying ‘Let Data Reign’ is exactly the kind of flip-flopping doubletalk voters hate about career politicians like Mike Rogers. Michiganders know they are paying more because of policies pushed by the Trump administration and Elon Musk, and voters will reject the candidates they’re bankrolling.”
