Shot/Chaser: Trump Betrays Lordstown on Auto Jobs – Again
tags
Washington, D.C. – In 2017, Donald Trump promised workers in Lordstown, Ohio that he would keep the local auto plant open, telling residents “don’t sell your houses” because the jobs would be staying. But two years later, it closed nonetheless. Now, after President Biden helped reopen the same factory as an electric vehicle battery plant, Trump’s policies have forced the company to permanently cut 550 jobs and temporarily lay off an additional 850 American workers. Trump’s war on clean energy is ceding electric vehicle manufacturing jobs to China, whose electric vehicle sales are “booming,” giving away the future of manufacturing for free even as his trade war continues to raise prices on everything.
SHOT: Axios: Flashback: Trump told Ohio factory workers not to sell their homes
At a 2017 rally in Youngstown, Ohio, President Trump promised residents that manufacturing jobs would be returning to the state, telling the crowd: “Don’t move. Don’t sell your house.”
Why it matters: General Motors announced Monday that it will “unallocate” multiple North American plants in 2019, including Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), whose constituency includes Youngstown and Warren, called on Trump to “keep his word,” claiming the president “has been asleep at the switch and owes this community an explanation.”
CHASER: Trump and Republicans are decimating American manufacturing, all to line the pockets of their billionaire Big Oil buddies.
