Vance Comes to Iowa to Sell Trump’s Agenda as Costs Skyrocket for Iowans

Des Moines, Iowa – Today, Vice President JD Vance will appear in Iowa to help Rep. Zach Nunn try to sell the Trump Administration’s failing agenda. Vance previously claimed that “the reason why gas prices are where they are today is because of Donald Trump’s work to get them lower,” yet since Trump attacked Iran on February 28th, Iowa’s gas prices have spiked 50% to $3.96. The price of fertilizer has also skyrocketed 35%, hurting farmers right as planting season is about to begin.
Utility prices are also on the rise in Iowa: Since 2025, at least three utilities have enacted or proposed a rate hike in Iowa, affecting over 642,000 customers. Yet instead of advocating for lowering the cost of living, Rep. Zach Nunn seems to be advocating to protect corporate polluters. Rep. Nunn, who’s facing an extremely close race yet has hosted exactly “no” public events in his district, confronted Speaker Mike Johnson after an amendment removing protections for pesticide companies was set for a public vote. Nunn was furious that the vote had to be taken, as his campaign has taken over $70k from agriculture chemical companies in his career.
Voters in Iowa are also furious — furious that out-of-state companies dump harmful chemicals into our water supply. Iowa has one of the highest cancer rates in the country. Over 21,000 Iowans are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2026. This controversy also comes as utility and gas prices are skyrocketing thanks to the Trump Administration’s vendetta against clean energy and his reckless war in Iran.
“Zach Nunn protects his donors and doesn’t care about Iowans,” said State Representative Austin Baeth (D-Des Moines). “Nunn has sold out his district. He has voted to shackle Iowans with costly tariffs, kill wind energy tax credits, and lead us into a reckless war with Iran that has caused costs to skyrocket for all Iowans, especially Iowa’s farmers. JD Vance coming to his district is yet another sign that Nunn is in trouble.”
