ROUND UP: Trump Continues to Take Energy Options Off the Grid as Americans Face Soaring Energy Costs

Customers in six states faced rate hikes as high as $17 per month
Inflation rose at the fastest pace since 2023 as energy costs spike thanks to Trump’s war of choice
Washington, DC – Americans continue to reel from an energy affordability crisis that Trump and Republicans made worse by taking a sledgehammer to clean energy projects across the country. On top of that, Trump’s war of choice in Iran has sent average gasoline prices soaring to above $4.50 per gallon, with analysts predicting that they could reach $5 per gallon in June if the Strait remains closed. Even if the war ends, experts say that it will take months for gas prices to fall back to their pre-war levels.
Inflation is skyrocketing, rate hikes continue to pile up, and with the midterms looming, Republicans are scrambling to make excuses. Instead of trying to lower costs, Trump is paying companies to take energy options that would have powered millions of homes off the grid. In recent weeks, customers in six states have faced rate hikes and a clean energy project in New Mexico was canceled.
North Carolina
- Dominion Energy filed for a rate hike in North Carolina that would raise the average monthly residential bill by $17.
Ohio
- The Bowling Green Board of Public Utilities is considering an electric rate hike that would raise monthly residential bills by $7.
Pennsylvania
- PPL electric customers in Pennsylvania can expect to see a 1.5% increase in electricity prices starting June 1.
Kansas
- Empire District Electric Co., in Kansas is requesting an electric rate hike that would increase the average monthly residential bill by more than $50 after three years.
New Mexico
- Ebon Solar canceled plans to open a solar manufacturing facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A spokesperson for Albuquerque’s Economic Development Department partly attributed Ebon Solar’s cancellation to “federal policy constraints.” Ebon had planned to invest $942 million in the factory, which was expected to create 900 permanent jobs manufacturing solar cells and support 2,665 construction jobs.
Oklahoma
- Oklahoma Natural Gas is requesting a rate hike that will raise the average residential customer’s monthly bill by $1.53.
South Carolina
- Santee Cooper is seeking an electric rate hike in South Carolina that will raise the typical residential customer’s monthly bill by more than $13.
