U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell Pushes Back on Republican Lies About the Future of Electric Vehicles

Ann Arbor, Mich. – In a forceful opinion column published today in The Detroit News, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Ann Arbor) debunks erroneous claims by Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans and explains how their positions on EV manufacturing would devastate the American economy, especially in communities here in Michigan. In fact, she argues, continuing to invest in EVs, battery technology, and automotive mobility is a national imperative that will create jobs, drive innovation, protect the environment and ensure that our nation is a global leader in the automotive technologies of tomorrow.
Rep. Dingell frames the debate as a clear choice – will we build EVs in America or allow China to dominate the industry?
“The choice is ours. Will we continue to protect American jobs and the environment, keep the United States at the forefront of auto manufacturing and innovation, and keep our industry strong and competitive, or will we cede our rightful place as a global leader in innovation and technology to competitors like China?”
Dingell also refutes the Republican propaganda around EV “mandates.”
“The Biden-Harris administration’s clean energy plan is about giving us more options — not taking things away. Despite claims from Republicans, there is no ‘war’ or ‘bans’ on gas powered cars, nor is there a ‘mandate’ that people must buy EVs.”
And she makes a powerful case for continuing the clean energy progress achieved by the Biden-Harris administration.
“As we supercharge the development, manufacturing and deployment of EVs, we must ensure they’re built in America by American workers and keep our promise that no hardworking American will be left behind from this transition. This means implementing policies that prioritize workers, making EVs even more affordable and accessible to consumers, building out our nationwide charging infrastructure, and reinforcing our power grid.”
Dingell makes it clear that Michigan’s workers have established the Great Lakes State as a national leader in our Clean Energy Economy. Now, thanks to leaders like Gov. Whitmer, the state legislature, and the Biden-Harris administration, Michigan has an opportunity to step onto the global stage as a leader at the forefront of innovation and EV manufacturing.
MAGA Republicans like Donald Trump and Mike Rogers, in the pockets of Big Oil, would rather feed Michiganders lies about non-existent EV mandates and cede the future of automotive innovation to foreign competitors like China than put Michigan workers first. This is a real danger, not only to our economic future but also to the over 21,000 Michiganders who will provide for themselves and their families with jobs that investments from the Biden-Harris administration are creating.
