ICYMI (46 Years Ago): Big Oil Knew Climate Change Would Make Extreme Weather Worse

Washington, D.C. — The devastation sweeping Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton comes as no surprise to Big Oil execs. In fact, in 1978 they were briefed that their business would directly cause more intense storms and natural disasters.

Today, while fossil-fueled disasters destroy Americans’ homes, Big Oil is spending millions to re-elect Donald Trump, who will dutifully deny the reality of the climate crisis in service of the industry’s bottom line. Donald Trump and JD Vance’s climate denialism only makes them untrustworthy to undecided voters.

Alex Glass, Managing Director of Communications for Climate Power released the following statement:  “The science is clear – fossil fuels make extreme weather deadlier and more unpredictable. A vast majority of Americans understand this – and Big Oil execs have known for decades. Donald Trump is either a liar, or he’s just stupid. Either way – he’s unfit for office and he’s unwilling to keep communities safe from the devastation caused by storms that are becoming more deadly because of climate change.”
