Biden-Harris Administration Awards Mainspring Energy $87 Million As Pittsburgh’s Clean Energy Economy Continues To Boom

Pittsburgh, PA — Today, the Department of Energy announced funding for projects focused on accelerating domestic clean energy manufacturing in former coal communities. The largest selected project, Mainspring Energy, will be awarded over $87 million to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility near Pittsburgh. The project will produce 1,000 linear generators per year that can run on any gaseous fuel and support utilities, data centers, microgrids, and more.
Pennsylvania has seen over $1.08 billion in private investment for climate and clean energy projects since the passage of the clean energy plan in 2022, and thousands of jobs have been created or moved forward as a result. The Mainspring Energy project will build on this momentum by creating 291 construction jobs and 600 operations jobs.
“Thanks to funding from the Biden-Harris Administration, Mainspring Energy will create good-paying jobs and a healthier environment in Pittsburgh, while revitalizing a former coal community’s leadership in energy production,” said Climate Power’s Pennsylvania State Desk, Kelley Hardon. “This project provides a model for a just transition to clean energy in Pennsylvania, and it would not be possible without Vice President Kamala Harris’s tie-breaking vote for the clean energy plan.”
The project is anticipated to generate 250 MW of power that can be placed where it is needed most. It also includes a community benefits plan developed to maximize economic, health, and environmental benefits for the local community.
