Washington, D.C. – Josh Stein was elected Governor of North Carolina, defeating climate denier Mark Robinson. While Robinson spouted dangerous conspiracy theories, Stein ran on his record of holding corporate polluters accountable and protecting the freedom to clean air and water. Climate Power Executive Director Lori Lodes issued the following statement:
“North Carolina voters decisively rejected the climate denialism and dangerous conspiracies of Mark Robinson and elected climate champion Josh Stein as the state’s next governor. Josh Stein showed leadership after Hurricane Helene, protecting North Carolinians from price gouging. He campaigned on strengthening North Carolina’s infrastructure to better prepare for climate disasters and continuing investments in clean energy, creating good-paying jobs and lowering energy costs. Governor-elect Stein will continue the historic investments that North Carolina has made in its clean energy future and protect North Carolinians’ freedom to breathe clean air and drink clean water.”
Climate played a critical role in North Carolina’s gubernatorial race:
- Josh Stein campaigned on building on investments from the clean energy plan which has already spurred more than $19.09 billion in private-sector investment and created more than 11,850 good-paying clean energy jobs across the state.
- Mark Robinson opposed efforts to develop offshore wind energy, calling wind power “unreliable, outrageously expensive, environmentally suspect, and socially irresponsible.”
- Josh Stein ran on his climate record, including his record of holding corporate polluters accountable for dumping toxic chemicals into our water.
- Mark Robinson is a climate denier, who called climate change “junk science” and vowed to keep science out of elementary school programs.
- As Attorney General, Josh Stein worked to protect North Carolinians from price gouging following Hurricane Helene by enforcing the state’s price gouging law.
