ICYMI: Republican Rate Hike Already Underway

Washington, DC — As Congressional Republicans move closer to a final vote backing a nationwide Republican Rate Hike, CNN has launched an online tool that lets users explore how household energy costs, job losses, and rising air pollution from power plants and vehicles could affect each state. The data is pulled from a recent report released by Energy Innovation, Assessing Impacts Of “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” On U.S. Energy Costs, Jobs, Health, Emissions.
Key findings from CNN include:
- President Donald Trump and Republicans are itching to kill tax credits that lower the cost to build wind and solar, which are now cheaper than fossil fuels like natural gas and coal. More wind and solar on the electricity grid helps keep utility bills lower, and clean energy tax credits were set to rapidly ramp up production of those cheaper, renewable projects.
- Household energy bills will be higher over the next decade if Republicans pass their tax and spending bill.
- States that voted for President Trump, including Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas, could see up to 18% higher energy costs by 2035 if Trump’s bill passes, compared with a scenario where the bill didn’t pass.
- Annual household energy costs could rise $845 per year in Oklahoma by 2035, and $777 per year in Texas. With clean energy tax credits in place, both states are projected to deploy a massive amount of wind and solar. If Republicans repeal these investments, however, Oklahoma and Texas will have to scramble to bridge the resulting energy deficit.
- South Carolina is expected to see the biggest spike in annual energy costs if Congress passes the Republican Rate Hike. The state generates a lot of its electricity from nuclear, with natural gas supplying the remainder. The report shows that South Carolina stands to add a lot of solar to its electrical grid with tax incentives but would have to revert back to gas if those credits go away.
