JD Vance Visits Canton to Try to Sell the Republican Rate Hike Bill to a State Projected to Lose Tens of Thousands of Jobs

Columbus, OH — This morning, Vice President JD Vance returned to Ohio to tout the recently passed Republican Rate Hike, which experts project will spike energy bills and destroy manufacturing jobs. Vance’s event is the latest stop on his new tour to sell Trump’s historically unpopular bill.
“Ohioans deserve good jobs and affordable energy bills, not partisan policies that raise costs and ship jobs overseas,” said Carol Kauffman, Executive Director of Ohio Environmental Council. “Vice President Vance’s support for the Republican Rate Hike is a direct threat to working families in Canton and across our state. This disastrous bill will spike utility bills for Ohioans by up to $190 while giving huge tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy.”
“Canton’s future depends on affordable energy and strong manufacturing jobs that support our families,” said Andre Washington, Ohio President of A. Philip Randolph Institute. “It’s important that we focus on solutions that protect family budgets and strengthen our local economy. The path to real opportunity comes from investing in people and communities, not policies that drain resources from hard-working families and send good-paying jobs overseas. That means supporting job training, expanding access to union jobs, and investing in industries that build things right here in Ohio- by Ohio workers. When we uplift our workforce and prioritize local investment, we create a stronger, more secure future for every neighborhood in Canton and beyond.”
At a steel plant in Canton today, Vice President Vance falsely claimed the Republican Rate Hike makes it easier to invest in American energy and energy workers. However, the facts say otherwise:
- A nonpartisan analysis found that the Republican Rate Hike will eliminate 700,000 jobs over the next 10 years, including 34,000 jobs in Ohio.
- The Trump-Vance Republican Rate Hike could increase the average American family’s utility bill by an average of $170 within a decade, and by up to $190 in Ohio.
- Trump and Vance are weakening grid reliability and gutting production by slashing 340 GW of energy production from the grid, including nearly 14 GW in Ohio by 2035.
