Twenty Years After Hurricane Katrina, Trump Has Gutted Our Hurricane Preparedness

Washington, D.C. — This week marks twenty years since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, killing more than 1,800 people. Major storms like Katrina are becoming more frequent and destructive, but Trump is rolling back the progress that has been made over the last twenty years to prepare for and respond to them. More than 180 experts risked retaliation from Trump to warn that the administration’s reckless cuts and poor leadership are sending FEMA “back to a pre-Katrina era.” Trump has gutted our hurricane preparedness and disaster response – putting lives at risk when hurricanes strike.
Climate Power Senior Advisor for Climate Urgency Sarah Galvez issued the following statement: “Twenty years later, people are still impacted by the failed disaster response during Hurricane Katrina. Now, Donald Trump is gutting the very systems built to ensure that it never happens again, rolling back the progress of the last two decades and abandoning communities to once again face major storms on their own. With major hurricanes becoming more frequent and severe, Trump’s reckless cuts will only cause more devastation and put more people in harm’s way.”
