2,667 Michigan Clean Energy Jobs Already Lost or Threatened Under Trump, With Tens of Thousands More at Risk

Lansing, Mich — In just 100 days in office, President Trump’s tariffs, executive orders, and all-out assault on clean energy have put Michigan’s clean energy boom at risk.

New data released today from Climate Power shows that 95 clean energy projects have already been threatened, delayed, or canceled nationally since Trump took office, representing $71.24 billion in investment and 62,554 jobs. Here in Michigan, four clean energy projects have already been cancelled and another four are threatened or delayed, totaling 2667 jobs already on the chopping block because of Trump Administration actions.

Repealing the clean energy tax credits could lead to tens of thousands more lost jobs, more project closures, and higher energy costs for Michiganders.  Since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, Michigan has seen 25,357 new clean energy jobs and $39.85 billion in new clean energy investment, all of which is at risk if Republicans in Congress repeal the 2022 clean energy tax credits.

“Trump’s war on clean energy and his chaotic policies have already caused a hemorrhaging of manufacturing jobs in sectors that had been booming for two years,” said Lori Lodes, Executive Director of Climate Power. “Repealing clean energy investments would jeopardize hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs on its own. On top of this crisis of uncertainty, repeal would devastate American manufacturing — halting construction, sending jobs overseas, hiking energy costs, and forfeiting the future to China and our other competitors.”

In addition to creating new jobs, clean energy saves Michiganders money: the transition to clean energy will reduce U.S. electricity prices by between 20 and 80% by 2040. Trump’s proposed tariffs, on the other hand, will cost Michiganders money: studies show that households will suffer a loss of $3,800 on average, while utility companies will likely raise rates for customers.

“Michigan is on the move, leading the nation in winning clean energy projects, creating good-paying jobs, and bringing private investment to lower costs and achieve our climate goals,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “But thousands of these jobs and billions in funding are at risk due to tariffs and pushes to repeal historic clean energy investments. This report highlights how important it is for us to work together to protect these historic investments that are driving Michigan’s clean energy economy and helping us create good-paying jobs in communities across our state. Let’s keep working together to make more clean, American energy here in Michigan, protect our precious air, land, and lakes, and build a bright future for our state.”

Prior to Trump’s election, the United States was experiencing the largest boom in factory construction investment in American history, spurred in large part by the clean energy tax credits. However, since the beginning of the Trump Administration, that growth has begun to reverse. If the Trump Administration succeeds in repealing the clean energy tax credits, it would be a disaster for American energy independence and could lead to more than 25,000 lost jobs in Michigan and more canceled projects like the ones in the Metro Detroit area.
