Americans Facing New Rate Hikes as Gas Prices Spike

Americans are paying $90 million more on gasoline today than a week ago
Trump promised to cut energy bills in half in his first year in office – instead, they spiked 13% as he’s slashed investment in solar and wind
Washington, DC – While Donald Trump’s war in Iran continues to send gas prices soaring to multi-year highs, life is already more expensive at home thanks to his reckless energy policies. Customers in Michigan, Kentucky, and Washington are facing new rate hikes as Trump and Republicans take a sledgehammer to clean energy projects across the country.
Democratic Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel plans to intervene as the state’s largest utility company requests another rate hike just days after the Michigan Public Service Commission approved a $242 million hike for the company. Representatives Bill Huizenga (MI-04) and Tom Barrett (MI-07) voted for the budget bill that guts clean energy projects in Michigan as energy demand skyrockets, and now, their constituents are paying the price. Michigan saw one of the biggest jumps in gas prices in the country following Trump’s war, with gas prices increasing by 24 cents in just two days.
Climate Power Senior Advisor Jesse Lee issued the following statement: “As Donald Trump focuses on a costly and dangerous foreign war that is already spiking gas prices, America’s families are still paying the price for the energy crisis that he created here at home. It’s supply and demand 101 – Trump and Republican lawmakers like Representative Huizenga and Barrett voted to take clean energy options off the grid as demand soars, and now, utility bills are skyrocketing too. As long as these rate hikes keep piling up, we’ll continue to hold Republicans accountable for their failed policies.”
Donald Trump’s reckless energy policies are causing utility rates to skyrocket across the country:
- The Texas Railroad Commission approved a natural gas rate increase for Texas Gas Service customers in El Paso that will raise monthly bills for small residential customers by $3 to $4, and larger residential customers by about $11.
- Kentucky Power submitted an application to the Kentucky Public Service Commission to add $4.59 to the average customer bill by 2029 to pay for the replacement of a cooling tower at one of its coal plants.
- The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved revised rate increases for FirstEnergy companies, which will go into effect on March 1. Illuminating Company customers were expected to see an $11.60 monthly increase and Ohio Edison customers were expected to see a $2.88 monthly increase.
- North Dakotans will see their electricity bills increase by nearly $12 per month after the North Dakota PSC approved a rate hike for Xcel Energy.
- The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approved rate hikes for customers of Wellsboro Electric, Valley Energy, and Citizens’ Electric Co. of Lewisburg that will raise electricity prices by as much as 18%.
- Peoples Gas, which supplies natural gas to nearly 900,000 Chicagoans, is seeking a rate hike that would raise the average monthly bill by $10 to $11.
- Nicor Gas, which has 2.3 million customers in northern Illinois, is seeking a rate hike that would raise the average monthly bill by around $6.
