APRIL FOOLS: Skyrocketing Gas Prices Are a Joke to Donald Trump and Republicans

Americans have spent $8 billion more on gasoline since Trump started his war of choice in Iran
Washington, DC – As the national average price of gas crosses $4 per gallon for the first time since 2022, Trump and Republican lawmakers seem to think Americans are fools. They keep saying it will be over soon, but in reality, Americans have been pinching pennies to make ends meet while gas prices soar with no end in sight. Trump’s tariffs cost American families $1,200 last year, and now, with oil prices this high, they are projected to spend $150 more per month if prices stay at $100 per barrel.
Donald Trump: “I don’t have any concern about [gas prices]. They’ll drop very rapidly when this is over, and if they rise, they rise, but this is far more important than having gasoline price go up a little bit. And they haven’t risen very much.”
NEC Director Kevin Hassett: “If the war were to be extended, it wouldn’t really disrupt the US economy very much at all. It would hurt consumers, and we’d have to think about what we’d have to do about that, but that’s really the last of our concerns right now.“
Donald Trump: “Short term oil prices, which will drop rapidly when the destruction of the Iran nuclear threat is over, is a very small price to pay for U.S.A., and World, Safety and Peace. ONLY FOOLS WOULD THINK DIFFERENTLY!President DJT”
Donald Trump: “The United States is the largest oil producer in the world, by far, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money.” (SPOILER: Trump is talking about the people he cares about most — billionaire oil and gas donors — not the working families who will pay the price for his reckless war.)
Karoline Leavitt: “”We understand. We hear you. We see you. We are fully tracking this short-term fluctuation in oil and in diesel prices.”
JD Vance: “The reason why gas prices are where they are today is because of Donald Trump’s work to get them lower.”
It’s not just members of the Trump administration who are telling Americans to quit whining about higher gas prices, vulnerable Republicans are gaslighting their own constituents by downplaying the impacts of the energy crisis that Trump’s war kickstarted.
Representative Zach Nunn (IA-03): “The people who should be most concerned about energy security right now are our biggest adversaries… Here in America, we’re going to make sure American families don’t feel the pinch.”
Representative Chuck Edwards (NC-11): “I believe there’s a lot of emotion built into energy prices… I would look for things to settle down very soon.”
Representative Scott Perry (PA-10): “[Higher gas prices are] the price of freedom. This is the price of security. It’s not going to last forever.”
Representative Scott Perry (PA-10): “Americans want this thing wrapped up and they want to move on with their lives and they want oil prices and gasoline prices to go back to where they were immediately. And unfortunately, that’s just not kind of the reality.”
