BREAKING: Michiganders Hit with Another Utility Rate Hike as Trump’s War on Cheaper, Cleaner Energy Rages On 

Lansing, MI – As Trump declares a “massive and ongoing” military action in Iran, Michiganders are already facing soaring utility bills thanks to his reckless energy policies. Now, following today’s latest rate hike decision, Consumers Energy’s 2 million customers in Michigan will be hit with an additional $276.6 million in higher energy costs – the largest Consumers rate increase in more than two decades. Meanwhile, the investor-owned utility is already making plans to request yet another increase in June.

Representatives John James (MI-10), Tom Barrett (MI-07), and Bill Huizenga (MI-04) voted to cut our energy supply even more by gutting clean energy projects across Michigan as demand soars. These attacks on clean energy led to 23 clean energy projects in Michigan being canceled, delayed, or losing federal funding, resulting in 7,834 lost jobs and nearly $1.2 billion in lost investment. Since 2025, at least five utilities have enacted or proposed rate hikes in Michigan, totaling more than $4.6 billion, affecting over 4.3 million electric customers and 3.3 million gas customers. Since Trump took office, gas and electric utilities have raised or sought to increase bills by more than $90 billion, affecting more than 111.5 million electric customers and nearly 55.5 million gas customers across 49 states and Washington, D.C.

Climate Power Senior Advisor Jesse Lee issued the following statement: 

“Trump and every Michigan Republican in Congress forced this rate hike along with rate hikes all over the country. They were warned by power companies, by tech companies, and by unions before they voted to gut America’s clean energy production that it would cause rate hikes like this, but giving massive tax cuts to their donors and big utilities was more important. They also rubber-stamped Trump’s haphazard war in Iran which has caused Michigan gas prices to go through the roof, Trump’s massive health care cuts, and Trump’s tariff’s that have raised costs on everything else and wreaked havoc on Michigan’s economy. Higher costs for Michigan families mean higher profits for billionaire Republican donors, and the Republican agenda is working exactly as intended.”
