Historic Contracts to Increase Pay, Conditions for Workers Key to America’s Clean Energy Boom

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – In response to UAW members voting to ratify contracts with Ford, GM, and Stellantis, Climate Power senior advisor for clean energy economy, Alex Wall, issued the following statement: 

“The ratification of these contracts is a historic win for America’s auto workers, the clean energy industry, American consumers, and our climate. As President Biden has made clear, our economy grows best when we grow the middle class, and that means working people can’t get left behind. The contracts between the UAW and the Big Three will increase pay, recognize the contributions and sacrifices that workers have made to create the auto industry’s massive profits, and result in better working conditions for the people who are building our clean energy economy. 

“It’s great news that workers at battery plants will have a path to get covered by the terms of this historic agreement. And the benefits of these contracts go well beyond UAW workers. Auto companies like Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and more, have increased wages for factory workers in response to these deals. This tremendous progress would not have been possible without the grit and determination of working people and their unions.

“American workers can outcompete anyone, and these contracts pave the way for the clean energy future to be Made in America.” 

Since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, over 210,000 clean energy jobs across 44 states and Puerto Rico have been announced, totaling  $310 billion in new investments. Of the 210,000+ new clean energy jobs, over 130,000 jobs are in the EV and battery industry.
