DNC Night Three: A Fight to Protect our Clean Air and Water

Washington, D.C. — On night three of the Democratic National Convention, leaders from across the party highlighted Kamala Harris’ commitment to protecting our freedom to breathe clean air and drink clean water. Kamala Harris has spent her career fighting for clean air and water and taking on corporate polluters — including securing over $50 million for taxpayers in settlements from Big Oil.
“The 2024 election is a fight for our basic freedoms. Kamala Harris will protect our freedom to clean air, clean water, and a healthy climate, while Donald Trump wants to sell off our progress to the highest bidder,” said Lori Lodes, Executive Director of Climate Power. “Kamala Harris spent her entire career putting people first and holding corporate polluters accountable. Donald Trump is begging oil and gas executives for $1 billion and promising to gut climate progress to pad their bottom line. We can’t afford another four years of climate denial, and we will not go back.”
What Democratic National Convention speakers had to say about Vice President Harris’ fight for our freedoms:
- Governor Tim Walz: “This is a big part of what this election is about: Freedom. When Republicans use the word freedom, they mean the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office, corporations free to pollute your air and water… But when we Democrats talk about freedom, we mean the freedom to make a better life for yourself and the people that you love.”
- Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi: “On January 20th, 2021, with the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, we established one of the most successful presidencies of modern times. And we quickly proved that Democrats deliver – millions of jobs, stronger infrastructure and rural broadband, a Biden child tax credit, rescuing human pensions, honoring our veterans, bold climate action, and lowering the cost of prescription drugs – all thanks to Joe Biden’s patriotic vision of a fairer America. Doing so with liberty and justice for all.”
- House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries: “Kamala Harris and House Democrats will continue to combat the climate crisis with the fierce urgency of now.”
- Governor Josh Shapiro: “We are the party of real freedom… real freedom that comes when she can join a union, marry who she loves, start a family on her own terms, breathe clean air, drink pure water, worship how she wants, and live a life of purpose where she is respected for who she is.”
- Attorney General Dana Nessel: “As California’s Attorney General, Kamala Harris never shied away from a good fight. She’s held accountable environmental polluters, sexual abusers, and transnational gangs.”
- Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz: “Today in Florida, as we grapple with record heat and rising seas, extreme MAGA Republicans deleted mentions of climate change from state law.”
- Milwaukee Advocate Deanna Branch: “When my son Aiden was 2, he was hospitalized due to high levels of lead in his blood. Lead was everywhere. In our pipes, in our paint, and in our soil. President Biden and Vice President Harris passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. It’s removing lead pipes from communities like ours. As President, Kamala Harris will make sure everyone can drink clean water and be, in Aiden’s words, lead-free superheroes.”
- Milwaukee Business Owner Rashawn Spivey: “When President Biden and Vice President Harris announced their goal to replace every lead pipe in America, Heroes [Plumbing] stepped up to help make that vision a reality. We went to work replacing lead pipes that served homes and childcare centers in our communities. Since then, we’ve replaced more than 1,000 pipes. That was made possible thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris.”
