FACT CHECK: Trump and Vance will roll back our progress and cede power to China

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Donald Trump does nothing but repeat the same debunked lies about the historic clean energy plan because he can’t defend his own record of nonstop auto job losses and shuttered factories. Trump didn’t save the auto industry – he actively harmed it and surrendered the lead to China

The clean energy plan makes electric vehicles more affordable, drives down gas prices and pollution, and creates good-paying jobs in the United States. In fact, the plan has created 176,000 battery and electric vehicle jobs since it was passed two years ago.

FACT: Donald Trump is threatening to eliminate 176,000 EV supply chain jobs and $148 billion in clean energy investments, which, according to The New York Times, “would end up helping China, economists say, by jeopardizing hundreds of billions of dollars in manufacturing investments that have already been made in the United States and sending that work back to other countries, including China.”

FACT: While Donald Trump was president, his hostility towards the clean energy industry allowed China to pull ahead in EV manufacturing.

FACT: Long-range EVs now cost less than the average car.

FACT: Washington Post Headline: “It’s never been cheaper to buy an EV.”

FACT: Los Angeles Times Editorial Headline: “Trump and oil companies are lying to you about electric cars to serve their own interests”

FACT: Washington Post Fact Check: The clean energy plan has “sparked a manufacturing boom in the United States — also designed to counter China’s dominance in the green energy arena.”

FACT: In April 2024, an annual EV cost study by Vincentric, found that nearly half of all EVs were cheaper to own than gas vehicles.

FACT: American consumers have already redeemed more than $1 billion in EV tax credits directly from the dealer thanks to the clean energy plan.

FACT: The average EV owner saves $1,700 per year on fuel and maintenance costs and can save up to $12,000 on fuel costs over a 15-year period.

FACT: More than 90% of households would reduce the percentage of their income spent on transportation with an EV.

FACT: The EV transition will keep American manufacturing jobs. A top exec at GM said “We’ve done our own analysis at General Motors, and there are other studies that have affirmed that the employee base needed in the future for EV production is very similar to what’s needed for a comparable [internal combustion] vehicle today.”
