FACT CHECK: Trump’s Affordability Crisis is Spiking Utility Rates, Raising Prices for the American People

WASHINGTON, DC – In his State of the Union address, Trump just lied to the American people again — claiming that his administration has “rapidly ended” high prices, bragging that his energy policies are like “another tax cut” for the American people. But when voters are looking at their monthly bills, they understand this couldn’t be further from the truth. He promised to cut energy costs in half in his first year, but Trump has never been known to keep his promises. So here’s the truth:

FACT: Electricity prices spiked by up to 13% in communities nationwide, with the average U.S. household paying $116 more on its electricity bills in 2025 than it did in 2024.

FACT: Since the beginning of his second term, utility companies have raised or sought to raise rates on American families by at least $92 billion, resulting in higher bills for at least 112 million electric customers and 52 million gas customers.

FACT: Trump’s reckless tariffs cost the average American household $1,200 last year alone.

FACT: Trump’s clean energy cuts are expected to increase electricity rates by up to 18% by 2035, resulting in an additional annual $170 increase in household energy bills.

FACT: Trump gutted assistance for families struggling to afford their utility costs, firing all LIHEAP employees and delaying billions in LIHEAP funding for weeks during and after his government shutdown.

FACT: Trump’s administration has gutted disaster relief, and in combination with his tariffs, home insurance costs have been projected to rise nearly 40% faster.
