Iowa Republicans on Recess as Iowans Struggle to Pay for Gas, Groceries, Utilities
tags
Des Moines, Iowa – This week, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Rep. Zach Nunn are on recess while they continue to ignore the affordability issues that are top of mind for Iowans. Unfortunately for everybody, Trump’s war of choice in Iran, which they all rubber-stamped, is sending gas and diesel prices through the roof, making everything from airfare to groceries more expensive. This comes after Republicans voted to gut clean energy production, taking clean energy projects offline at a time when energy demand and utility costs are skyrocketing.
To make matters worse, Rep. Zach Nunn downplayed concerns about energy security, saying that only our “biggest adversaries” should be concerned and that they are “going to make sure American families don’t feel the pinch.” Meanwhile, at home, Iowans are forced to pay $0.88 more per gallon at the pump, a 33% increase in gas prices since the war started.
Here are just a few ways Iowans are worse off thanks to Trump:
- Since Trump took office, average residential electricity prices have increased by 7% in Iowa.
- 56,068 Iowa households are behind on their utility bills, with an average debt of $710.26.
- Trump and Republicans’ budget bill is expected to cause a loss of 7.4 GW of generation capacity in Iowa, threatening grid reliability and higher costs as energy demand rises.
Here are some questions Rep. Zach Nunn and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks owe Iowans answers to:
- What would you say to Iowans who are struggling to pay for the rising cost of groceries, gas, and utilities?
- What’s your response to the majority of Iowans who don’t support Trump’s war in Iran?
- Why haven’t you stood up against President Trump’s attacks on clean energy in Iowa?
Rep. Randy Feenstra, Rep. Ashley Hinson, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and Rep. Zach Nunn have voted to gut clean energy projects in their own state that would have created jobs and protected Americans from global energy shocks. Meanwhile, Trump is bragging about making money off of the war and telling Americans to quit whining about soaring gas prices, leaving vulnerable Republicans scrambling to spin his disastrous economic agenda.
