JD Vance Heads to Michigan As Gas Prices Skyrocket

Earlier today, Trump’s economic advisor, Kevin Hassett, said that the war would impact consumers but that it was “really the last of our concerns right now.”
Last week, Vance said that gas prices — which have surged thanks to Trump’s war — are “where they are today” because of Trump
Washington, DC – As JD Vance continues his tour across the country, spinning Trump’s disastrous economic agenda with a stop in Michigan, gas prices have increased by more than 80 cents, thanks to Trump’s war of choice in Iran. The price spikes come as Trump and Republicans have taken a sledgehammer to EV manufacturing and clean energy, leaving Michiganders vulnerable to global oil shocks.
Trump promised to bring back American manufacturing, but instead, his war on clean energy has decimated Michigan’s auto industry, handing the future of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing to China on a platter. To date, 23 clean energy projects have been canceled or delayed in Michigan, impacting 7,800 good-paying jobs. Michigan Republicans like Representatives John James, Bill Huizenga and Tom Barrett have rubber-stamped Trump’s cost-raising agenda, even though they knew it would hurt their own constituents.
Climate Power Senior Advisor Jesse Lee issued the following statement: “As gas prices skyrocket thanks to Trump, JD Vance is heading to Michigan to do damage control on Trump’s policies that have sent costs soaring from groceries and utility bills to health care. Vance won’t even give a straight answer on whether he supports Trump’s reckless war that has sent gas prices skyrocketing, because he knows that Michigan and the rest of America oppose it. At the same time, Trump and Vance have decimated EV manufacturing in the state, stripping Americans of their choice in vehicles in the face of high gas prices and sending jobs overseas — and Michigan Republicans like Representatives James, Huizenga and Barrett have helped them do it. Michiganders are tired of being lied to, and this November, they’re going to hold Republicans accountable at the ballot box.”
Trump and Vance are bad for Michigan:
- Since Trump attacked Iran, Michigan’s gas prices have skyrocketed 28%.
- Trump’s attacks on clean energy led to 23 clean energy projects in Michigan being canceled or delayed, resulting in 7,834 lost jobs and nearly $1.2 billion in lost investment.
- Trump’s clean energy cuts were projected to take 4.4 GW of capacity off the grid in Michigan, or enough to power more than 3.5 million homes for a year, at a time when demand is soaring due to data centers.
- Meanwhile, Trump is threatening to block the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge between Michigan and Ontario, Canada, which will raise costs and threaten job creation.
- Far from fulfilling his promise to cut energy costs in half in his first year, since Trump took office, Michigan’s residential gas prices have increased by more than 10%, and electricity prices have increased by more than 5%.
- Since 2025, at least five utilities have enacted or proposed rate hikes in Michigan, totaling nearly $5.7 billion, affecting over 4.3 million electric customers and 3 million gas customers.
- By 2035, Trump’s clean energy cuts were expected to raise Michiganders’ annual energy bills by $320, gasoline bills by $102, and wholesale electricity prices by 34%.
- Trump’s tariffs alone cost American households $1,000 in 2025, and were expected to cost $600 in 2026. Trump’s tariffs increased costs for Michiganders, and they were expected to raise the price of a car by $3,000 and to cost GM, Ford, and Stellantis up to $7.3 billion.
- Trump’s tariffs were expected to increase home insurance costs in Michigan. The National Association of Home Builders estimates a cost increase of $10,900 per home due to tariffs on construction materials.
