LISTENING TO DEMANDS FROM AMERICANS, CONGRESS TAKES MAJOR STEP TO ENSURE BOLD CLIMATE ACTION WILL RECEIVE A VOTE IN SEPTEMBER

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With Congress voting to open up the pathway to a debate and consideration of the full Build Back Better plan, Lori Lodes, Climate Power Executive Director, noted this progress is a clear sign there is still the opportunity for Democrats to pass legislation that can build a clean energy economy here in America to truly confront the climate crisis.

“Today’s vote shows that House Democrats heard voters’ demands for a more just, equitable economy powered by clean energy,” said Lori Lodes, Climate Power Executive Director. “With a framework in place, now Congress must quickly put pen to paper on policy that meets the needs of American families, who are struggling with the escalating impacts of COVID-19 and the climate crisis. Americans need leadership now, and they cannot wait.”

In the runup to today’s vote, Hart Research analyzed recent polling and found that the political landscape on climate and clean energy has completely changed, with moderate and suburban voters strongly supporting budget plans that invest in clean energy and climate, believing those reforms are essential.

Hart’s assessment was backed up in the most recent polling that Data for Progress did on behalf of Climate Power in the nine districts represented by moderate Democrats who threatened to hold up the progress of the Build Back Better Budget. Voters in these districts cited additional investments in clean energy and climate change as a top priority. Voters also back passage of President Biden’s Build Back Better budget plan and would be significantly less likely to vote for a Congressional candidate who opposes the president’s agenda.
