NC GOP Redistricts for More Power While Power Bills Skyrocket

Raleigh, NC — Instead of addressing the urgent needs of everyday North Carolinians, Republican lawmakers in the state legislature are prioritizing Donald Trump’s demands. Yesterday, North Carolina Republicans voted to redraw congressional maps—again—this time to lock in an 11-3 advantage for NC Republican representation in the U.S. House, prioritizing partisan control over progress.
Despite already holding a majority, Republicans in both the state legislature and Congress continue to chase political dominance instead of doing their jobs and protecting families in North Carolina. “There is still no state budget. Families face skyrocketing utility bills. Health coverage remains in jeopardy. But instead of tackling these real problems, Republicans are following Donald Trump’s playbook—rigging the rules to cling to power,” says Terryn Hall, NC State Director for Climate Power.
Here’s what they’re ignoring:
- Western North Carolina is still waiting for recovery funds from Hurricane Helene. Instead of helping communities rebuild, Republicans spent years weakening building codes that could have helped homeowners withstand future storms. Now, those same families are being left behind.
- State Republicans passed HB 402, the so-called REINS Act, which makes it harder for state agencies to respond to public health threats—like PFAS contamination. These “forever chemicals” are polluting drinking water across the state, and GOP lawmakers just made cleanup even harder.
- While families struggle with higher energy bills, Republicans passed SB 266—legislation that weakened the state’s carbon reduction plan and made it easier for Duke Energy to raise rates. North Carolinians’ bills are already up by $61, with more hikes on the horizon.
- North Carolina was once a leader in clean energy innovation, bringing good-paying jobs to rural communities. However, every Republican in the state’s congressional delegation has voted against the very policies that helped build this progress. With $12 billion in clean energy investments at risk and 1,332 jobs already cut, the GOP is turning its back on a winning economic opportunity.
North Carolina Republicans could be lowering costs, protecting communities, and bringing new jobs to the state. Instead, they’re focused on cementing their political power—leaving working families to deal with the consequences.
