New Ads Educating Iowans about  Rep. Miller-Meeks’ Votes Against Disaster Funding

Iowa City, IA  — While members of Congress are home for the August recess, Climate Power launched digital billboards across Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, educating Iowans about Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ record of voting against disaster funding. As climate-fueled extreme weather becomes more frequent and destructive, these cuts to disaster preparedness and response will put more lives at risk and leave Iowans to foot the bill for rebuilding after storms like the 2008 flood and 2020 derecho.

Iowa received over $253 million from FEMA after the 2020 Derecho and over $1.2 billion after the 2008 flood, both of which devastated Miller-Meeks’ congressional district.

The new Climate Power ads show images of recent extreme weather disasters and say: “Lives depend on disaster funding. Rep. Miller-Meeks voted against it.” The ads—which will be displayed across the district on digital billboards and urban panels—are part of a six-figure ad buy in key congressional districts in Iowa, Texas, and North Carolina.

Climate Power Senior Advisor for Climate Urgency Sarah Galvez issued the following statement: “Iowans are still reeling from the devastating impacts of extreme weather and know firsthand how important it is for help to show up when disaster strikes. They should know that Rep. Miller-Meeks voted against disaster funding and is standing by as the Trump administration is trying to enact policies that would force families to pick up the tab after storms wrecked their homes and communities. When climate disasters strike and federal relief is delayed or missing, Iowans need to understand that it’s these policies that put them in harm’s way.”
